Event 2

Verdi Opera Aida

War opera.19th century Europe was in the grip of a fascination for Egypt. Embodying this Egypt-mania, the opera Aida is one of the most famous and yet one of the most contradictory stories created at the initiative of Ismail Pasha for the new theatre in Cairo, and the occasion of the inauguration of the Suez Canal. The proposal was first rejected and later accepted with condescendence by Verdi. Nothing in the composer's world predisposed him in fact to exoticism and Aida was in no way a concession. This opera was supposed to celebrate, as is done on such solemn occasions, universal concord, harmony between peoples, but is in fact a war opera, the one between Egypt and Ethiopia - nothing compared to the war raging between the characters. And their bloody clashes bow in turn to the inner struggles engaging each character. At once flamboyant and hieratic, this spectacular and interior work is one of Verdi's finest masterpieces, returning to the Paris Opera after more than half a century.
